The Healing Power Of Energy Work

By Laurie Buchanan, Phd, HHP, CHT, RMT

The human body is an amazing design. It is filled with energy and has three separate—yet interdependent—energy systems. These energy systems are alive and intelligent. Each of us has a personal energy signature that we are responsible for. Everything in our sphere of influence affects it—people, plants, animals, appliances, color, sound, electronics, food, etc. When you assess their energetic contribution, are they having a positive or negative influence on your energy?

Energy Systems – The three human energy systems are the chakras, meridians and the human energy field (HEF) or aura. These systems govern energy throughout our body. At the top of our head we have a high, fast frequency; at the base of our torso we have a low, slow frequency; with a variety of frequencies in-between. Human energy has four possible conditions: balanced, blocked, excessive or deficient. The only healthy condition is balanced.

Chakras – Energy Processing Centers - The human body has seven major and twenty-one minor energy processing centers. These energy stations are known as chakras. Each chakra oversees a variety of functions throughout the body. They interact through the endocrine system and nervous systems, governing specific organs, glands, systems, sub-systems, emotions and thoughts.
These, in turn, reflect the condition of their respective chakras. This is why it is vital to keep them healthy and balanced. Like the majority of our physical body, some of our chakras start forming while in utero and continue to develop through adolescence and early adulthood. Outside influences play a part in determining the condition of our chakras. For example, if a person suffered a birth trauma, abandonment, or physical neglect, their base chakra could
be deficient.

Meridians — Energy Pathways - There are fourteen meridians throughout the human body. Somewhat like an intricate transportation system, energy condenses and disperses in alternating cycles of negative and positive (Yin and Yang), traveling throughout our body via the meridian lines. A breakdown in this transportation system is unhealthy. When a person has an acupuncture treatment, the practitioner places hair-fine needles at strategic points along these pathways to help resolve energy imbalances.

Human Energy Field (HEF) – Aura - This is the energy shell which extends out from and surrounds the physical body. The HEF is also referred to as the aura. It is made up of many colors which change with our thoughts, emotions and physical wellbeing—or lack thereof.
Few people are able to see auras with the naked eye. Through the aid of Kirlian photography, it is possible to capture an accurate image of the HEF which surrounds the body.

What is Energy Healing?

The father of medicine, Hippocrates, recognized the body’s innate ability to recover. He called this the healing power of nature. Energy healing—also known as energy balancing or energy attunement—stimulates and activates this natural power.

Modern physics provides a solid, scientific rationale for a variety of energy-based modalities that have been used to promote health and wholeness—body, mind and spirit—for thousands of years. Today, more and more people are experiencing the reality of healing through energy work.

Although our physical bodies suggest that we are purely material beings, we are, in fact, fields of energy. As energetic beings, our health depends in great part on the free, unrestricted flow of our energy. Energetic attunement is the balancing and harmonizing of our personal energy signature.

An energy-based modality is a type of therapeutic approach designed to restore energetic harmony in the body. These modalities can relieve fatigue, boost the immune system, facilitate healing and create clarity in the mind. They can also reduce stress, lift depression and reduce pain, leaving you feeling refreshed and restored.

In today’s fast-paced society we rarely relax long enough for our bodies to experience what Hippocrates was talking about—the healing power of nature. But deep relaxation is required for regenerating all levels of our being—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Energy work helps our bodies to achieve profound relaxation so that it can begin to heal itself.

Everyone Can Benefit from Energy Work

The subtle vibrations of energy work have a transforming effect that helps restore wholeness to energy that has become depleted or imbalanced. These unhealthy conditions occur in a number of ways. Many amenities that we use regularly throughout the day are constant drains on our energy. Consider the cumulative effect of computers, cell phones, MP3 players, interactive computer games, hair dryers, microwaves and television.

Energy work can balance our personal energy signature and help to repair damage that some of these conveniences inflict. People who can benefit from energy work are anyone who is stressed, overworked, exhausted, depressed, or in pain—physical, mental or emotional.

Energy work is also beneficial for those who are exposed to toxic air and water, changing their emotional health through psychotherapy, work in a hostile or charged environment, feel their lives are off-track or stagnating, need motivation, are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy treatments, are on a path of personal development or spiritual growth.

In The Guide to Health, Wellness & Creative Living
, you will find contact information for a variety of practitioners who offer energy work and who approach health and wellness from a holistic point of view. These energy-based modalities include reflexology, cranial therapy, acupuncture, vibrational therapy, Reiki and crystal therapy—to name but a few. And remember, you don’t have to be sick to feel better.
